Would you have ever imagined that man would walk on the moon, or even Mars for that matter? Did you ever stop to think what life would be like if planes, trains and boats did not exist? Have you ever considered what American society and culture would look like without the work of Martin Luther King Jr.? Our lives would be so much different. We would have much slower and less efficient travel, an unreached solar system, and a society without a good example of what it looks like to fight for unity, peace and brotherhood in the right way. All of these accomplishments took time, energy and work, and they all started with a dream.
Did you notice that every single accomplishment that is celebrated today had its first breath of life inside someone’s imagination? Every single solution to a problem, advancement, or achievement began in someone’s mind when they chose to dream for something. We went to the moon, invented better transportation, and moved toward racial and social equality because someone dared to dream for it. And all of the accomplishments and achievements in your own life were birthed out of a desire or a dream inside of you too.
But let’s not live in the past. Think about the current goals and accomplishments you are striving to achieve right now. Do you have any? Do you want your goals to be bigger, crazier, more expensive, more challenging than they are right now? Your goals were birthed from a dream inside of you. Therefore, the only way to see them grow is to dream into them even more. Do not let probability or the obstacles you are currently facing hold you back from wildly dreaming. Start dreaming about what you truly want and let your goals follow after them, no matter how impossible or hard it may seem. I dare you to start dreaming the impossible because out of the impossible dream, the most unbelievable accomplishments are achieved.
The problem we tend to run into is that past experiences of disappointment or failure have caused us to throw our dreams into a dark closet and lock the door while inviting fear to take its place instead. We were once free to dream big and imagine great things while taking bold stances to see them come to pass; but once we got rejected, or our plans didn’t work out the way we had hoped, or someone spoke death over what we were trying to bring to life, then we gave into the voice of fear and doubt and gave up. The grief of watching a dream crumble to the ground can almost be unbearable at times. But what we must learn to do is to get back up, dust ourselves off, and start dreaming again.
Because you see, dreams are the gasoline of your life that propels you to move. Without them you cannot move forward and you cannot fulfil your purpose because a man without vision perishes. You were made to dream! So do not let past failures or fear keep you from doing what you were made to do.
Lastly, know that, “No one is remembered for what they only planned to do.”*
